AIM Weekend Recap

  AIM 2008

 We AIM to Please!

WOW.. what a great weekend eh?  Jim and Renee once again proved why Region 3 has the best to offer when it comes to education and talent.  From the Friday night introduction, through all the lessons on Saturday, followed by a terrific dinner and show, it was a jam-packed weekend full of education and entertainment.

With 285 attendees, AIM 2008 proved to be the largest attended AIM weekend in years.  Representatives from nearly every chorus in the region experienced a show stopping performance by the fabulous Melodeers as well as our very own Four Betty's.  Keeping company with these world-renowned winners were some of our other quartets who will be representing Region 3 at International in Hawaii this year.  Chi-Town sound experienced their first sing with the champs while the veterans Jukebox showed once again why they continue to return to the International stage.

The entertainment on Saturday struck a chord with several choruses who had us rolling in the aisles with favorites such as the "Hooked on Classics" medley by Grand Rapids and an encore International performance of their "Laundry package" by Prairie Echoes.  Of course we would expect nothing but perfection from our own directors who did a more than fine job in the first annual "Directors Chorus" performance (Oh, did we forget to mention that you'll be doing this every year?  Oops).  Amidst all the laughter were unforgettable moments such as Fandangle's final performance, fantastic MC work by Judy Herrick and Julie Zehnder and an awesome sing with the champs with the Melodeers that brought nearly every singing voice onto the risers, what an amazing experience.

We laughed, we cried, we learned a lot and shared the gift of music with each other and next year we will do the same as we welcome more phenomenal faculty to this phenomenal region.

The Region 3 RMT would like to extend a special thank you to Debi Batchelor for booking Jim and Renee during her reign as Education Coordinator, and to our current Education Coordinator, Ann Jarchow for putting together a stellar weekend and to Jim Arns and Renee Porzel for reminding us once more why we do what we do.

AIM Survey Review

SURVEY SAYS....

The AIM weekend survey went out and many of you  shared your thoughts with us, so we thought we'd share some of the most interesting results with YOU!!

1.  The most interesting concepts taught at AIM were "Personality Colors" and "CPR."

2.  With not a single "Poor" response, ratings for our faculty, Jim and Renee, were overwhelmingly excellent!

3.  Most of you liked the boutique but want to see more tables and a wider variety.

4.  Many of you liked seeing the RMT but would like a bigger presence with more opportunity to talk with them.

5.  Vocal performance and PVI's are of most interest for future education.

6.  The most common response for topics to consider that weren't listed was "Fundraising" with a close second of "Membership Retention and Attention."

7.  The Chorus coaching session was VERY well liked and you would like for it to be brought back.

8.  Interest in Sunday classes were split evenly across the board.

9.  The majority felt Merrillville is a terrific location for AIM.

10.  Out of 680 active members in our region, 133 of you responded to the survey (20%)
Of the 133 respondents, 92 attended AIM.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us what is important to you. This information will help your Regional Management Team to tailor these important events specifically toward the needs of our Region.   If you have ideas or suggestions for future educational or musical events, this is your time to tell us.

AIM Weekend
"REGION #3'S GOT TALENT" was a huge success thanks!  I believe we all can honestly admit we came away from this weekend having learned something about them, something about ourselves (I'm blue) and something about how to be a better singer and chorus member.  KUDOS to all involved in this excellent weekend, especially our faculty of Renee Porzel and Jim Arns.

Coming Up:
Keep your eyes and ears open for information regarding our PVI Hubs!  These Hubs will be designed to give opportunities to singers in our region for a voice lesson from one of our Winner's Circle faculty members in a location near you.

We are also working with Joan Boutilier to offer an exciting new program.  See what Joan says about it:
"I just came back from a meeting in Tulsa for the Directors Education Coordinators (DEC) of which I am a member.  During that meeting we talked about the DCP program and the DCP manual.   I am willing to teach a program based on the DCP modules, not only for Director candidates or women enrolled in the DCP program, but for anybody who wants to become a better singer and/ or find out what's involved with running and directing a chorus."
Sounds fabulous, doesn't it?  Look for more about this in the near future!

AIM 2009
Prepare for another "blast" of talent as Region #3 hosts International faculty members Dale Syverson and Peggy Gram for a weekend you won't want to miss.  Put the weekend of 10/03/09 on your calendar NOW!

No Sweat News
 No Sweat News - small
By now, most of you have had a glimpse at the new regional membership campaign "No Sweat."  Some of you were able to view the membership presentation at the Regional Convention Rally in Grand Rapids; others of you have had personal visits from one or more of the Regional Management Team to discuss the campaign and what it means for the region.  During AIM weekend, many of you saw the campaign for the first time in the form of a cool little pin that was being given away.

If you are seeing the campaign for the first time, you are encouraged to visit the regional website and point your mouse to the membership section which now features much of the material that has been shared throughout the year thus far.  If you are already familiar with the campaign, you will be glad to know that some of the information you've been asking for is now available online in the membership section of the Regional Website.

"No Sweat News" is the newest Voices column dedicated specifically to membership issues and geared toward the new regional campaign.  Because membership was the number one concern among our choruses, your membership committee is dedicated to providing you with information and resources that will be helpful in boosting your membership numbers.  We also invite you to submit your own thoughts, feedback and testimonies about membership that you think may be helpful information across the region.

Right now, Region 3 is ranked 23rd internationally out of 30, experiencing a 4% decline in membership.  However, this decline in membership is typical in the second fiscal quarter due to increased personal responsibilities during the summer.  However, wouldn't it be nice to be A-typical?  Perhaps next summer will be seen as an opportunity to reverse this trend.

Our focus now is on the winter months, a common time of year to be host guests singers for Holiday shows.  If your chorus is interested in inviting guest singers to perform on your Holiday show, please contact Penny Hock for details in how to approach this wonderful opportunity to increase membership.

Many choruses are currently utilizing the concept of guest singers for holiday shows and seemingly, the average increase in membership is between 2 and 5 percent respectively.  If your chorus currently uses the method of hosting holiday guest singers and is interested in mentoring another chorus to assist them in launching this membership opportunity, please contact Penny Hock.

Another method for increasing membership is becoming a dual member.  Many members dismiss the concept of dualling because of lack of knowledge, concern about how her current chorus will perceive her decision, and concern about cost.  None of these reasons should deter you from seeking information on becoming a dual member.  For the choruses who do welcome this practice for their members, if you are geographically situated near another chorus, consider mutually hosting an annual holiday show to provide the opportunity for your members to experience dual membership.  The increase in size is sure to be a crowd pleaser, and not only will you increase your membership, you will generate enough revenue and interest to warrant consideration of a repeat performance next year.

For more information on membership, please visit the Region 3 website or contact me at Pennyhock@charter.net.

Keep on Growin'

Melodeers

Fun at AIM Weekend
Neither rain nor floods could keep the Melodeers away from AIM weekend!  Jim Arns and Renee Porzel were honored to be the guest faculty, along with the Melodeers, who served as a demo chorus.  On Saturday night we loved debuting our four contest songs which we will be singing in Hawaii in November.  We are all looking forward to representing Region 3 on the International stage, and can't wait to get there! We loved the special songs you sang to us at the end of our performance, and really enjoyed having you join us on the risers for "Sing With the Champs."

Honolulu Rally
If you are heading to contest in Honolulu, plan on attending the Region 3 Rally on Wednesday, November 5, 11:00 AM, Coral Ballroom 3, Hilton Hawaiian Village.  It really helps get our adrenaline going when our friends show us their love and support, and we love hearing you cheer when we're backstage waiting to perform.

Preview Show
If you won't be in Hawaii, come to our Preview Show on October 12 at 3:00. See our website, www.melodeers.com for details.  Jukebox, Chi-Town Sound, Martini (Region 26 2008 Champions), and NRG! (Region 22 2008 Champions) will be performing along with us. The Sweet Adelines International web site has all the info you need to watch and support the Sweet Adelines Web Cast live from Honolulu, too!  If you can't be there with us - cheer us on from home!

 Melodeers at Cubs game

The Melodeers Sing and the Cubs Win!!!
The Melodeers were honored to sing the national anthem at Wrigley Field on August 21st, 2008.   It was an unforgettable experience for Jim Arns and 17 Melodeers to sing in front of a packed ballpark of 39,000 Cub fans.  [Editor's note:  I'll bet the Cubs are wishing that Melodeers had opened for them on October 4.  Maybe next year!]

As soon as life gets back to "normal", the Melodeers will be making a new CD.  We'll keep you posted.

Melodeers Chorus

Let's hear your voice!

What is your favorite summer-time chorus or barbershop activity?

From Judy Westers at Grand Rapids . . .

Westers Family at Slamka FestOur whole family enjoyed a weekend of barbershop fun in July when we went to Jack & Kitty Slamka's home in July.  They live on quite a country spread with a barn and swimming pond.  Folks with tents, campers and RVs begin arriving as early as Tuesday or Wednesday and stay until Sunday.   You've never seen so many regional and international medals from both organizations in one place except for perhaps at an international convention.  There is a lot of singing and a little bit of golf mixed in.

On Saturday more quartets arrive for the day and enjoy coaching from some of barbershops' best.  The kids play with other barbershop kids and grandkids and Miss Kitty has a few surprises up her sleeve for Saturday like a hat parade (homemade of course) or an Easter egg hunt and the famous "paint the pig".

The pinnacle remains the Saturday evening show with the stage set in front of the barn.  Everyone is invited to sing  and the show begins with a children's talent show followed by any of the quartets present.  There are usually a few surprises here too!

Under 10 QuartetThe highlights for me this year were singing Edelweiss with my husband and 3 children in 4-part harmony and my 9 year old daughter singing tenor with 3 ten year olds named Slamka and Denino.

Barbershop harmony from 10 and under!  Who would believe it?  You have to be there to enjoy the harmony.

Sing for the Health of it!

Barring the fact that singing at the highest level we are capable of singing is just plain old FUN - there have been new studies regarding the "aura" of types of singing and how they can positively affect your well-being!  Now, some of you may scoff at things like psychics, reflexology, acupuncture but for those of you with open minds, consider this . . .
Sound therapist Jovita Wallace says "Sound vibrations massage your aura, going straight to what's out of balance and fixing it."

 *    Singing the short-a sound, as in 'ahh', for 2-3 minutes will help banish the blues. It forces oxygen into the blood, which signals the brain to release mood-lifting endorphins.

*    To boost alertness, make the long-e sound, as in 'emit'. It stimulates the pineal gland, which controls the body's biological clock.
*    Singing the short-e sound, as in 'echo' stimulates the thyroid gland, which secretes hormones that control the speed which digestion and other bodily processes occur.
*    Making the long-o sound as in 'ocean' stimulates the pancreas, which regulates blood sugar.
*    To strengthen immunity, sing the double-o sound, as in 'tool'. This activates the spleen, which regulates the production of infection fighting white blood cells.

Spring Valley

Spring Valley Chorus was certainly feeling "Fit as a Fiddle" after our coaching session with Jim Arns and Renee Porzel at Region 3's AIM on September 13th.  The valuable encouragement and the fine tuning they offered couldn't help but build our spirits and determination to get it just right.  They coach in such a positive way, leaving no doubt in anyone's mind that anything is possible.

Spring Valley Chorus at AIMOur participation in the evening show was the culmination of a summer of special events for us.

Besides our usual National Anthem before a July Schaumburg Flyers game, we were asked and gladly agreed to also sing the Anthem before a Chicago Bandits Women's softball game.  And, of course, both teams won with SVC cheering them on.

In early June we teamed up with Brotherhood of Harmony for a cabaret program.  What a thrill to mix men's and women's voices in barbershop harmony.  The song the choruses sang together was an overlay of America the Beautiful, carrying on what seems to be a very patriotic theme for us this summer.
 Spring Valley Community
The season started off with an invitation to sing during the Cost of Freedom weekend in Schaumburg, entertaining the visitors who came to view the replica of the Viet Nam Wall and other military services displays.  We dedicated our program to the USO and that organization even provided us with an official USO banner.  We felt so proud to be part of this tribute to our military forces past and present.

What's new at EOT??

Our chorus of 28 has been plagued by illness, injuries and mishaps - every week we come to rehearsal just to see who made it through another week unmarked!!  We've had one stroke, 3 surgeries, unexplained dizziness and broken bones.  Without singing I think we'd all have gone crazy.

The end of May we celebrated the 90th birthday of one of our favorite baritones Clare Doud.  Clare has been a Sweet Adeline for 39 years.  She is currently recovering from a broken pelvis which happened the day before her birthday. Not how she wanted to celebrate her day.  Clare's recovery is going well and hopes to be back at chorus as soon as possible.

This summer we've been working on new music for our December 14th show.  The outline of the show is the great race.  We're having so much fun trying to figure out how to travel the world in only 2 hours. Looking for tickets?? Give me a call.

EOT Chorus wishes all of our Region 3 International representatives in Hawaii best of luck and tell them to bring home the GOLD (and crowns)!!

1st Annual Quartet Workshop

"WOW" is what best describes Choral-Aires Chorus' first ever Quartet Workshop held July 28th at our rehearsal site in Elmhurst, Illinois.  This workshop, titled "Choral-Aires Queens High School Workshop" was offered to all choruses of Region 3 (and Region 22 too!) and was staffed by our five "Queen's of Harmony" (Joan Boutilier of The Four Bettys; Darcy Newell of Fanatix; Bonnie Fedyski of Fanatix & Chicago Fire; Amy Brinkman of Chicago Fire and Pat Rotunno of Jubilation) plus our talented Music Team!  Here was our recipe for this event that we would like to share:

Ingredients:
100's of eager singers (like you)
1 school filled with top-of-the-line teachers
            1 song

Mix the above ingredients well.  Sprinkle with heavy doses of laughter.
            Serve all harmonies immediately.

Thank you to over 30 guests from several choruses that were able to join us and be a part of this recipe for inter-chapter fun, singing and most importantly the knowledge gained from having a "taste" of the quarteting experience!  Choral-Aires Chorus is still enjoying the warmth of something fresh out of the oven and our guests have requested we bake this recipe again!!  So if you missed this one - there will be another one!!

As most of you know, we are on our journey to International Competition in Nashville in 2009 and we would like to invite everyone to take this journey with us.  We are having guest nights on August 4th and August 11th and would love to have you join us!

I.E.S. Wrap-up
Kicking it up a notch, the International Education Symposium held San Antonio in July put a fine cap on a 10-year run of summer classes, young women's quartet competions, and small- and mid-size chorus competitions.  Not to worry, though, the classes and competitions will continue in a new format.  Starting in 2009, the Rising Star quartet competition and the Harmony Classic chorus competitions will move to the International Convention.  The classes will be offered in Global Schools, starting in 2010, in five different locations to bring the opportunities closer to members.

Prairie Echoes Chorus won an invitation to compete in the Division A category at the 2008 Harmony Classic contest.  Their entertaining package of laundromat parodies earned 3rd place medals.  Congrats PE!

Region 3 has sponsored scholarships for IES for the past few years.  Three lucky members were selected for this year's final IES and they share their experiences with you here . . .

Mary Walters
What could be hotter than Texas in July?  Having a "hot" time and kickin' up my heels at IES!

This was my second IES, but I consider it my first real IES.  Last year our chorus, Midwest Crossroad, was a competitor in the Harmony Classic.  Even though I signed up for some classes, chorus rehearsals limited my choices.  It seemed the classes I really wanted fell into a time already blocked out for the chorus.  It was then I decided that I really wanted to go to the next one.  So, here I am.IES Walters w caption

My whole experience begins at the airport.  I was traveling alone so when arriving at the gate I saw a group of women excitedly chatting away.  I knew Region 3's Prairie Echoes Chorus was competing so I promptly approached the ladies and asked them if they were Prairie Echoes.  They weren't.  They were Choral-Aires!  When they learned that I was by myself, I was taken under their collective wing and treated as if I was a member of their own chorus.  Sweet Adelines sisterhood at its best!

From the opening session to the closing dinner party, it was an incredible time.  Jim Henry had us singing from the heart.  So much so that we had tears in our eyes.  First thing every morning, Ase Hagerman, Lori Lyford and Dale Syverson had us starting the day in song.  If we weren't discovering our "inner drums," we were flapping, fluttering and physically warming up with paper plates.  My classes ranged from the chorus management type (I'm our chorus membership coordinator) to "How to be a Great Lead."  (Guess which part I sing.)  There were class choices to satisfy everyone's interest.  Down time could be spent in many ways.   Some chose to go into downtown San Antonio to shop, visit the Riverwalk, and see the Alamo.  Others opted to stay on campus to swim (and sing) at the pool, explore the grounds or have a drink at the Tiger's Den.

From my competition notes:  "Whole Lotta Harmony," Rising Star Quartet winners, made me wish I had started singing at a younger age.   Harmony Classic Division AA champions, Metro Nashville, singing first, set a very high bar for their competitors and Stockholm City, Division A champions, brought the entire house spontaneously to their feet.  All quartets and choruses gave wonderful performances.
The final event was a dinner "dance."  As always, there was food, drink, and song, but this time included good ol' country line dancing. The deejay would teach the steps and then we'd dance.  I couldn't tell you how many different dance steps we learned but we danced the night away!
The sad part now is that it's over and it was the last IES.  The best part was learning that wherever I go, here or around the world, I have a friend in every Sweet Adeline.

I would like to say "Thank You" to Region 3 for affording me the opportunity of attending this year's IES.  I am most grateful for the Scholarship I was granted that assisted in getting me to San Antonio.

I had the pleasure of attending multiple classes.  Some of those I attended dealt with membership, singing word sounds vs. words, staying in pitch, getting creative with the music and doing different rhythms within the songs.  These are only a few of the classes I had that I gathered information from to share with my fellow choruses.  I also enjoyed the main speaker IES this year, Dr Jim Henry.  After hearing him at classes while I was there I have to say he is a wonderful speaker and educator.  He was able to explain in a verbal and visual manner to help everyone understand what he was doing.  I found it fascinating while he demonstrated how to stay in pitch that a simple hand gesture could make the difference between on pitch and higher than the pitch pipe.  It really can be done to sing a tone and make the pitch pipe sound flat.

There were many opportunities to learn, to socialize with Adelines I know and to meet members I didn't know.  It won't be the same without IES but I look forward to the ways we will be afforded to learn in the future.  I am very proud to be a member of the two choruses I belong to and can't wait to find ways to share anything I learned at the final IES.  Maybe someday down the road IES will pop back in the picture and we will get to have it once again.  But for now, everyone should watch for upcoming places and dates and try hard to attend the next educational opportunity afforded us by our HQ Staff.

What an awesome set of experiences!  The "fever" is now part of my skin, but even more so, part of my heart and mind!  From San Antonio International Airport where one could just about pick out all the Sweet Adeline gals arriving and feel the excited anticipation at an otherwise grueling baggage claim area, to the return trip of checking in bags and finding the gate to Detroit Metro Airport for the final leg home, it was one delight after another!  Well, almost every moment with very few exceptions - which in the grand scheme of things is not at all noteworthy.  What a privilege to be part of the tenth and final IES.  There were a few Adelines there who have attended every one of the ten!

The Opening Session, "From Start to Finish", focused on three segments of three different ballads for demonstrating ballad phrasing and embellishments. We started with the introduction to It is Well with My Soul, moved to a middle segment of You'll Never Know and then the ending of Scotland the Brave. Rumors, 1999 Internatinal Quartet Champs, did the demonstrations.  We also sang through the thematic repertoire of the week: If You Had All the World and Its Gold, Kickin' Up a Notch and Song's Gotta Come From the Heart.  These three numbers improved as the week went on and most of us managed to be off the paper by the end.  Using them in some of the classes provided a link to the entire week and gave participants opportunities to sing them with more heart and technique.

There couldn't have been a finer keynote speaker than Dr. Jim Henry, Director of Choral Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  Among the many pearls of wisdom he offered throughout the week, one that stands out early on was "The reason the chorus doesn't remember all that you (the Director) tell/teach them is because they're not like you, they're normal!"  "The chorus must sing with emotion rather than a set of mechanical devices strung together."  "A song should not be a "paint by number" art piece when it could be the "Mona Lisa"!"  Participants throughout the week had the privilege of being in his sessions.

There were fantastic sessions in the quartet track.  How I wish I had the power of bi-location. A s it was, I bypassed lunch every day but one in order to get to as many as possible.  My favorite had to be "Barbershop Embellishments & Nuances" with Dale Syverson and the Four Bettys.  They provided us with so much inspirational demonstrations that it would have been worth the trip for these two sessions alone!  It was such serendipity to have been in sessions where the Four Bettys were featured in demonstrations. It took all my control not to stand up and shout, "They're from Region 3 and so am I!"  You know how much class and fun they bring to every performance and the IES sessions with them were no exception.

I look forward to the future Area Schools when I'm confident that Sweet Adelines International will go beyond our wildest dreams.  Thank you Region 3 for providing my partial scholarship that made the final IES such a set of treasured memories and fantastic learnings!

Choral-Aires

Choral-Aires at IES

We know they announced that this was the last IES of this kind but you would have never guessed that!  It was jammed packed with a phenomenally talented faculty, classes that definitely "kicked it up a notch" for us all plus the Rising Star and Harmony Classic contests that were just unbelievable!!  There were nine members of Choral-Aires Chorus who attended (pictured minus Cathy Wehrwein (dual member) as they were busy celebrating Prairie Echoes 3rd place win!!) and we came back with so much information that are heads are still spinning just like boot spurs!!  We are so very fortunate to be a part of an organization that offers such top notch and exciting events for its members!!  Thank you Sweet Adelines International faculty as well as the fabulous 2008 Queens of Harmony - The Four Betty's and we can't wait to see what's next!!
It was . . .
"A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening"

On August 16, four Hawaii-bound quartets, representing Regions 3 and 22, joined together to entertain and fundraise.  Nearly 160 people, representing families and friends from at least three states and three regions, attended the festive event.  From all reports, both the audience and the performers had a wonderful time, proving the show's title to be truly "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening."

We would like to thank the Four Bettys, 2008 International Quartet Champions, for donating their time and talent, as both emcees and performers.  And we especially want to thank every member of our audience for their enthusiasm and their very generous support of our fundraiser!  We intend to represent you well in Honolulu!

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!
