James (Jim) S. Arns Jr.

November 19, 1960 – December 29, 2025

James, Jim Arns Jr., beloved son, brother, uncle, friend, teacher, mentor, and musician, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025. He was 65.

Born on November 19, 1960, in Westmont, Illinois, Jim dedicated his life to music, education, and the transformative power of choral artistry. A gifted musician, organist, and director, he earned his master’s degree in music from Northwestern University and went on to shape the lives of countless singers through his passion, precision, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Jim served for many years as Music Director at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Hinsdale, where his musicianship inspired generations of parishioners. He was also a respected educator at Downers Grove South High School, where his love of teaching and mentorship left a lasting impact on students.

Perhaps best known in the Barbershop Harmony Society and Sweet Adelines International communities, Jim was the longtime director of the Melodeers Chorus, leading the organization to an extraordinary seven Sweet Adelines International Chorus Championship titles. His arrangements, artistry, musical insight, and exacting standards elevated not only the ensemble, but the entire barbershop community. As an arranger, coach, and clinician, Jim shared his knowledge generously, shaping singers and directors around the world.

Above all, Jim will be remembered for his talent and humor, and deep belief in the potential of others. He was a mentor to many, a trusted colleague, and a loyal friend whose influence will continue to resonate through the music he loved and the people he inspired.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Audrey Arns. He is survived by his brother, Gregg, and his beloved nephews, along with an extended family of musicians, students, and friends whose lives he profoundly touched.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 4th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home (44 S Mill St, Naperville, IL 60540).

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, January 5th 2026 at 9:30 AM at the Peter & Paul Catholic Church (36 N Ellsworth St, Naperville, IL 60540).
